When it

university of peking. It was founded to replace Taixue or Guozijian,
or imperial academy, as part of the hundred days' reform. Following the xinhai
revolution in 1912, the imperial university was renamed "national peking
university". The well-known scholar Cai Yuanpei was assigned president on january 4, 1917, and facilitated make over the
university into the country's largest institution of higher learning, with 14
departments and an enrollment of more than 2,000 students. Cai motivated by the
german model of educational freedom, employed an intellectually different faculty
that included Hu Shih, Chen Duxiu and Lu Xun.
In 1919, students of peking university organized the massive protesters of the May fourth movement. Attempts by the beiyang
government to conclude the protests by shutting off the peking university
campus led to cai's resignation. In 1920, peking university became the first
chinese university to enroll female students.
After the outburst
of the second sino-japanese war in 1937 (and the resulting extension of
japanese territorial control in east china), peking university shifted to Changsha and became the changsha temporary university along with Tsinghua University and Nankai University. The three schools moved again in 1938, this time to Kunming,
and became the national southwestern associated university. After world war ii in 1946, peking university shifted back
to beijing. At that point of time, the university included six schools (arts,
science, law, medicine, engineering, and agriculture), and a research institute
for humanities. The total student enrollment reached up to 3,000.
After the
people's republic of china was established in 1949, peking university lost its
"national" title to reflect the fact that all universities under the
new socialist state would be public. The chinese government re-assembled the
country's higher education institutions with individual institutions have a
propensity to specialize in a certain field of study in 1952. As a result, arts
and science faculties of tsinghua university and yenching university were combined
into peking university. However, at the same time, the university lost its law,
medicine, engineering and agriculture schools. These schools and faculties were
either combined into other universities or to set up new colleges. During the
re-arranging, yenching university was closed and peking
university shifted from downtown beijing to the ex-yenching campus.in 1966, the
first disturbances of the cultural revolution began at peking university
ceasing education between 1966 and 1970.
